My name is Bentley DuBois.

I am a Mètis man from Winnipeg Manitoba, Treaty One territory. 

 

I created legitimateindigenous.com out of sheer frustration of seeing indigenous culture being continuously appropriated, manipulated, misrepresented, exploited, and outright stolen.

 

This became so painfully evident during the discovery a part of the unmarked graves at the residential schools.

We witnessed numerous unscrupulous people and businesses, on a global scale, steal Indigenous art to quickly produce ‘Orange’ shirts. The Orange shirt is used to acknowledge and recognize what will always be the most tragic era of North American Indigenous history. 

These unscrupulous businesses then sold the Orange shirts to an unsuspecting public, who were genuinely interested in supporting the Indigenous community through these turbulent times.

 

We also saw similar tactics used for the MMIW movement. As well as a rise in non-Indigenous artists, writers, performers, etc. who were profiting by claiming to be of Indigenous decent.

 

Predendians….

Out of this the need for Legitimate Indigenous became increasingly and acutely necessary!

There was also a frustration in the non-Indigenous community. They wanted to know who the Legitimate Indigenous sources were to make purchases from and donate to. Who the authentic businesses, causes, organizations, movements, and agencies were, so they could feel secure in making purchases and donations.

legitimateindigenous.com provides both the Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities a legitimate opportunity to connect and in the simplest of ways, find common and respectful ground to share support and understanding.
